passeggiata o'clock

If aperitivi o'clock is Italy's happiest hour, passeggiata o'clock is definitely its most magical hour. As day slips into dusk, all of Italy will leave the warmth and comfort of their home to go on an evening passeggiata. On a Sunday this becomes much more than a stroll, it's the main social event of the day. Whole families will don their best shiny puffa jackets, the dog will be wearing his shiny puffa too, and take a turn around the town, stopping to greet their friends and have a chit-chat.

Passeggiata 101: If you find yourself caught in a passeggiata the first thing to do is to reduce your walking speed to 'snails pace'. Then go even slower. Italy and 'in a hurry' are not words that go together. Stop for a gelato, even if it's 5 degrees out. And if your passeggiata takes you past a row of chocolate market stalls, well, you might as well give yourself something to walk off...
